English studies today offers a wider range of classes, topics, and projects than ever before. You can still explore the classic works of literature and the great authors, to be sure. But now our curriculum also includes film studies and media, rhetoric and professional writing, the digital humanities, critical and cultural theory, and creative writing workshops. Students can focus their studies in these areas and choose elective classes that best meet their personal and career goals.

Our courses primarily cover the language and literature of English-speaking peoples, but English is a global language - literature in English now comes from all over the world. Many of our courses feature postcolonial fiction, drama, poetry, and prose from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas. The study of U.S.-based literature includes Native American, African American, Latinx, and Asian American works that explore the rich cultural diversity of contemporary society.

Through these courses students develop deep and broad skills in reading and writing and an eye for how to approach literature, language, and rhetoric from multiple perspectives. We encourage every student to question the meaning, context, value and aesthetics in the works they read and apply these critical analyses tools in their professional and personal lives.
