English studies today offers a wider range of classes, topics, and projects than ever before. You can still explore the classic works of literature and the great authors, to be sure. But now our curriculum also includes film studies and media, rhetoric and professional writing, the digital humanities, critical and cultural theory, and creative writing workshops. Students can focus their studies in these areas and work with our advisors to plan a curriculum that meets their personal and career goals best.

English has gone global as well. Literature in English now comes from all over the world. Many of our courses feature the postcolonial fiction, drama, poetry, and prose from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas. Here in the United States the study of literature includes Native American, African American, Latina/o, and Asian American works that introduce students to the rich cultural diversity of contemporary society.

Courses offered in the English curricular area of the Department of English are concerned primarily with the language and literature of English-speaking peoples. They are designed to develop skills in reading and writing and to offer students a variety of approaches to literature, language, and rhetoric. Further, the department seeks to encourage in each student a questioning approach to canon formation and aesthetic criteria, especially through the texts of previously marginalized minority and women writers, in order to gain insight into cultural diversity.
