English today offers a wider range of classes, topics, and projects than ever before. You can still explore classic works of literature and great authors, to be sure. But our curriculum also includes media, cinema and digital studies, rhetoric and professional writing, and creative writing workshops. Students can focus their studies in these areas and choose elective classes that best meet their personal and career goals.

In all areas of the English program, courses cover an inclusive array of texts and experiences that range over American and global literature, culture, and media. In addition to traditional English and American literature studies, English offers courses in African-American, American-Indian, Latin American, LGBTQ+, and Irish studies. We explore the rich cultural diversity of American and global societies.

English offers many writing courses, from first-year composition to advanced poetry and fiction workshops. Professional writing offerings include courses in grant writing and writing for nonprofits. Our creative writing courses include not just fiction and poetry, but also "Literary Journal Production," a course in which students collaborate to edit an issue of the literary journal Furrow. English students also can earn credits for an internship involving work in writing, editing, or publishing.

Through these courses students develop deep and broad skills in reading and writing and an eye for how to approach literature, language, moving images, and rhetoric from multiple perspectives. We encourage every student to question the meaning, context, value and aesthetics in the works they read and apply these critical analyses tools in their professional and personal lives.
