CGS REL 201 Asian Philosophy

An exploration of philosophically significant topics pertaining to the traditions of Asia. Attention will be paid to arguments pertaining to these topics as well as careful analysis of such classic primary sources as the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Analects, Daodejing, and Zhuangzi.

CGS REL 275 Religion, Spirituality, and Secularism in Society
3 cr.
The sociological approach to the study of religious beliefs, practices, and organizations, as found in the world religions, the religions of indigenous peoples, and new religions. Includes the role of religion in socialization, personal identity, family, politics, economics, and other social institutions. How religious patterns relate to race, ethnicity, class, and gender. The place of religion in modern and postmodern societies, including discussions of religion and secularization, fundamentalism, and globalization.
Prerequisites: Not recommended for first-semester students, except with consent of instructor.

CGS REL 343 Religion, Magic and Witchcraft

Descriptions and interpretations of magico-religious beliefs and practices in a variety of cultures from an anthropological perspective; examines theories about religion and some of the conceptual issues regarding the interpretation of religion and related phenomena which have interested anthropologists over time.
