Biomedical Sciences: Health Sciences

Do you need a flexible curriculum that makes the most of your previously earned credits? An aging workforce, new technologies, and continuous demand for bachelor's prepared healthcare professionals make this the perfect time to finish your Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences: Health Sciences degree.

The Biomedical Sciences: Health Sciences sub-major allows you to build on completed coursework and to develop or strengthen skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, information literacy, informatics, management, and education in the health professions. The flexible curriculum allows you to include undergraduate certificates related to disability, health and wellness, informatics, and healthcare administration.

Requirements

The interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences: Health Sciences submajor is open to those who have successfully completed 30 or more credits as intended majors at a four year or two year institution. It is not open for new freshman. 

The minimum degree requirement for completion is 120 credits including:

  1. Completion of UWM’s General Education requirements (GER), and
  2. Completion of math and English competency requirements, and
  3.  A cumulative UWM GPA of 2.5, and
  4. A final 30 credits from UW-Milwaukee.

Student plans of study are individualized based on previously completed coursework and student learning and professional goals. Credits must be distributed as follows:

30 credits must be earned with CHPS. CHPS credits may be earned in the following subject areas: BMS, COMSDIS, DMI, HCA, HS, NURS, OCCTHPY, PEACEST, and THERREC. The other 24 required health credits can be within CHPS or Zilber College of Public Health or as approved by the program director.

12 credits of BMS coursework is required. BMS 433 and BMS 434 will be applied to the 'Upper division health science credit'. The additional 6 BMS elective credits will be applied to lower or upper division credit depending on the course level.

Admission to the Major

Students must have:

  • Completion of 30 credits as intended majors at a four year or two year institution
  • Satisfactory academic standing

Honors in the Major

Honors in the major are granted to students who earn a GPA of 3.500 or above on a minimum of 30 completed credits at UWM.

College of Health Professions and Sciences Dean's Honor List

GPA of 3.500 or above, earned on a full-time student's GPA on 12 or more graded credits in a given semester.

Honors College Degree and Honors College Degree with Distinction

Granted to graduating seniors who complete Honors College requirements, as listed in the Honors College section of this site.

Commencement Honors

Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.500 or above, based on a minimum of 40 graded UWM credits earned prior to the final semester, will receive all-university commencement honors and be awarded the traditional gold cord at the December or May Honors Convocation. Please note that for honors calculation, the GPA is not rounded and is truncated at the third decimal (e.g., 3.499).

Final Honors

Earned on a minimum of 60 graded UWM credits: Cum Laude - 3.500 or above; Magna Cum Laude - 3.650 or above; Summa Cum Laude - 3.800 or above.
